Many rap artists try their hand at a side hustle, but a there are only a handful that have actually made it a profitable business. Led by the all-around business moguls, P Diddy and Pharrell, see which artists have created a brand outside of music.
In 2005, Pharrell Williams partnered with Nigo, the Japanese icon and founder of BAPE. The two collaborated to create and launch two high-demand streetwear brands: Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.
In 2012 BBC did record high $25 million to $30 million in volume, up from $12 million the year before. Originally, Billionaire Boys Club was only manufactured in Japan, but recently the production has extended to Canada, Mexico, Korea, and China in recent seasons.
The new G.O.O.D. Music president, Pusha T, leads a label with some of the more impressive roster of talented rappers including Travis Scott, CyHi the Prince, Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, 2 Chainz, and of course Kanye West.
But Pusha also owns the very popular clothing line, Play Cloths alongside his brother No Malice. The brand has been around since 2008 and it continues to be a strong seller among urban crowds. In 2014, Pusha T said he grossed over $5 million a year from Play Cloths.
Tyga’s name has been buzzing around the news lately, mainly because of his relationship with Kylie Jenner. But let’s not forget about Tyga’s side hustle outside of music. The LA rapper is very serious about fashion and style especially after the launch of his own streetwear line Last Kings. The brand is inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery. Tyga actually spent over a $100K designing and building Last Kings’ first retail store.
P Diddy has his hand in many companies which makes him the wealthy mogul that he’s become today, and fashion has been a venture of his for almost two decades now. Diddy started his world-wide clothing brand, Sean John, in 1998. Since it’s launch it has grown into a lifestyle brand that is worn by a wide variety of ages, not just young black men. Sean John is sold in major department stores and is one of Macy’s top selling men’s brands.
For the first seven years, Combs was the acting head designer and was later honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2004 as its Menswear Designer of the Year.
Today, Sean John has sold an estimated volume of $450 million.
T.I. is another mogul/rapper that has managed to pad his resume with acting roles, his record label Hustle Gang, and a globally selling clothing line. He is the owner of the successful fashion brand AKOO, which he describes as upscale urban apparel. AKOO is evolving into a family brand as well, and it's represented well in major department stores.
