For better or worse, Charles Barkley is a man who always speaks his mind, no matter the issue. His opinions in the past have led to some heated debates both on and off air, and his recent comments airing out "full of shit" Black people are no exception.
In an interview with The Shadow League, Barkley was asked about some of the criticism he has received from the public and from people on social media. When asked what he thought about Black people who questioned his "blackness," he kept it 💯.
"I don't worry about that. Listen, my track record speaks for itself. The one thing I've learned as a Black man is every time I say something that is not 100 percent in agreement with the Black community there's a faction that goes crazy. I don't care about that."
Barkley also spoke about not publicizing the millions of dollars in charitable donations he has made to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and that's where he really offended some people.
"I'm not trying to impress those c***suckers," the retired NBA legend-turned-commentator said. "I just gave Morehouse, Clark Atlanta and Alabama A&M in Huntsville a million dollars to help black kids go to college. I just gave Auburn two million to recruit Black kids...Listen, man, one thing I understand about being Black and famous is a lot of Black people are full of shit."
Even if you agree with some of what Charles Barkley said, there's no denying that his comments were abrasive and problematic, especially for a Black audience. And this is not the first time he has aired Black people out.
Two years ago, Barkley reportedly called Black people "unintelligent" and "brainwashed" in response to an article in Bleacher Report that said that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's teammates didn't think he was Black enough.
"We as black people are never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people," Barkley said. "When you are Black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other Black people...For some reason we are brainwashed to think, if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent, and don’t break the law, you’re not a good Black person. It’s a dirty, dark secret in the Black community. There are a lot of Black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success. It’s best to knock a successful Black person down because they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s just typical BS that goes on when you’re black, man."
Tell 'em how you really feel, Chuck.
