LeBron James: The man. The philanthropist. The businessman. The Cleveland Cavaliers athlete. But most importantly, out of all of these things, he is an Ohioan.
James wrote a piece last night in The Business Insider stating his endorsement for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Considering LeBron is basically looked at as a king in Northeast Ohio, his support will make a huge difference for the notorious swing state.
In the article, he talked about his upbringing in Akron and basically threw Trump under the bus, implying that someone like him would never understand what it's like to go through struggle, whether that struggle be because of finances, location, or the color of your skin. "As a kid, I didn't have much money," he stated." It was just my mom and me, and things were rough at times. But I had basketball. That gave me a family, a community, and an education. That’s more than a lot of children in Akron can say. There are a lot of people who want to tell kids who grew up like me and looked like me that they just don’t have anything to look forward to."
Although Trump appears to be a huge fan, James made it very clear that he will be supporting Hillary Clinton. He was very open about his support for President Obama in 2012, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise.
"I support Hillary because she will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama. I believe in what President Obama has done for our country and support her commitment to continuing that legacy."
This endorsement means more than we know. If LeBron's influence can help Hillary Clinton win the state of Ohio, it will be very unlikely that Donald Trump will achieve presidency.
He ends his article encouraging Northeast Ohio and the rest of the country to get out and vote. "There’s still a lot of work to be done in Akron, Northeast Ohio, and all across our great country," he stated. "We need a president who understands our community and will build on the legacy of President Obama. So let’s register to vote, show up to the polls, and vote for Hillary Clinton."
